A young man had an episode of sleepwalking a few days before the onset of an acute schizophrenic episode. The occurrence of these events coincided with his return home when he experienced marked tension in his relationship to his father and brother and marked seductive smothering from his mother. It is postulated that the somnambulistic episode and the psychosis have certain features in common regarding the forbidden impulses and the defenses against them.
