Robert Waelder, Chairman, opened the panel by remarking that this was the first in a proposed series of discussions on the libido theory and that the three main presentations introduced three different types of approach to the theory.
In order to locate the principal papers in the general framework of the libido theory, an attempt is herein made to arrange systematically, though not at all completely, in outline form, a breakdown of the theory into its component parts, indicating their relation, more or less, to some other areas of psychoanalytic theory.
Basic theoretic concepts inherent in the libido theory:
1Necessity of the theory as a prolegomenon to metapsychology
2Necessity of the theory as an operational concept
3Qualitative aspects
a.relation to physical and chemical energy
b.relation to biologic processes and needs
c.relation to a general theory of instincts
