A patient was presented who came into analysis with a postpartum depression of one year's duration. In the course of the analysis it was found that her most pressing problems had to do with the female castration complex. During analysis she had a second child with no depression. She requested discharge and was given a definite termination date. The threat of separation from the analysis caused a flow of previously unknown material, and deeper levels of the unconscious were uncovered. The importance
of finding out the meaning of the analytic situation and the end of the analysis was stressed.
