ENVY AND GRATITUDE. A Study of Unconscious Sources, by Melanie Klein. New York: Basic Books, 1957, x + 101 pp., $2.75.
According to Melanie Klein, envy arises from the infant's feeling of resentment toward the mother chiefly for oral deprivation. She considers this the basis of character traits such as greed, hostility, anxiety and guilt and the possible anlage of pathological syndromes such as homosexuality, schizophrenia, etc. Gratitude is the infant's response to the pleasurable experiences at the breast and to its mother's delight at its pleasures and its developing capacities. This is later reflected in generosity, healthy object relationships, altruism, the moral sense, love, creativeness, etc. There is a discussion of the therapeutic aspects of handling envy in analysis.
