Although time did not permit a final period of discussion it appeared that the panel was able to view vicissitudes of ego development in adolescents from a longitudinal as well as a structural point of view. Harley's presentation depicted the continuum of latency and adolescence as
viewed in long-term analytic treatment. Geleerd viewed the exaggerations of certain characteristic adolescent ego developments that become obstacles to growth and to treatment. Spiegel discussed the balance of organizing and disorganizing forces in adolescence which reflects the characteristics of dramatic maturation and development. He attempted to use this balance to enrich diagnostic thinking and therapeutic planning. The preparatory phase or first phase of treatment in adolescence reflects these considerations. Fountain attempted an analysis of the descriptive characteristics of adolescence that he has observed in his work. His presentation suggested the need for investigations in which direct observations and psychoanalytic observations of adolescents can be compared for the enriching of the psychological theory of adolescence.
