When the Journal was organized, it was deemed advisable to establish the position of Chairman of the Editorial Board. For this appointment a most felicitous choice was made in the person of Max Gitelson.
The earlier period of the Journal was one of Sturm und Drang. None of the original members of the Board had had extensive experience in establishing and maintaining a journal of this type. It was a matter of urgency to promote mutual understanding among the participants. It is in no small measure due to Max Gitelson that this was achieved, and today the work of the Journal is carried on in a spirit of genuine harmony. By virtue of his personality, his patience, and his unfailing dedication to principle, he brought to bear a markedly beneficial influence on the development and growth of the Journal.
Even as the years went on, and it became increasingly evident that the original purpose for which the Chairmanship of the Board was established had long since been accomplished, Max Gitelson continued to make invaluable contributions to the maturation of the Journal. With his expressed wish to resign after this year as Chairman, this position is now being discontinued. Perhaps this is as it should be, since the Board Chairmanship has become uniquely associated with the name of Max Gitelson. He has eminently earned the lasting gratitude of the Association for his many years of devoted service to the Journal.
