The thesis of this paper is that we need periodic relief from the burdens of certain ego functions, notably synthesis and fusion of ambivalent tendencies. Various social and psychological institutions or acts of creativity which afford such relief are reviewed. Creative art is a human product which establishes contact with the wide range of ambiguous feelings which we are in danger of losing in the process of maturation and civilization. The very ambiguity and imprecision of art contributes to its safety as a long-lasting device. Art thus enlarges the ego by increasing its points of reference to the unconscious infantile and ambivalent tendencies. Comedy serves a similar function by helping us re-experience the paradoxes of childishness and rebellion alongside of maturity. Even religious systems must offer outlets for aggression as well as love. For happiness and mental health childishness and ambiguity must not be too thoroughly sacrificed in the interests of rationality.
