The American Psychoanalytic Association is proud indeed to dedicate this issue of the Joumal to Heinz Hartmann in honor of his seventieth birthday which took place on November 4, 1964. This occasion presents a most felicitous opportunity to reaffirm the deep sense of gratitude we owe to Heinz Hartmann for his contributions to psychoanalysis. It is superfluous to reemphasize these contributions, which have so vitally stimulated psychoanalytic thinking and will continue to do so for many years to come. Once before we expressed these thoughts when we initiated the Monograph series of the Joumal with the first English publication of Ego Psychology and the Problem of Adaptation. We are very glad to wish him "many happy retums" and hope to do so again for his eightieth birthday.
