The superego proper as a discrete internalized psychic structure develops with the resolution of the oedipal conflicts. It is the end product of a prolonged period of psychic growth and development. It is conceived to be a product of the ultimate fusion of the matured ego ideal, various superego precursors, and those secondary identifications within the ego which result from the need to relinquish the oedipal objects. Concepts of the origin, development, functions, maturation, and composition of the ego ideal have been delineated.
A concept of the phase-specific, reciprocal, mutual enhancement of ego and superego maturation and development has been utilized. Concepts of the role of self-individuation, the distinction between primary and secondary identifications, the capacity to establish object cathexis, and the utilization and modification of instinctual energies in the development of the superego proper have been examined. The nature and differentiation of shame and guilt and their genetic relationship to the superego proper have been delineated. Finally, the functioning, regressive potentials as well as the capacity for further growth and alteration of the superego proper during latency, adolescence, and adulthood have been described.
