This paper presents clinical material illustrating the emergence of a wish for a child at a time when temporary interruptions in the course of the analysis are imminent. This wish is largely preoedipal in origin and occurs in both sexes. The theoretical explanation offered uses the idea advanced by Greenacre, Spitz, and others that the basic transference is a diadic one, duplicating the early mother-child relationship. Imposed separation in analysis evokes regressively defensive fantasies characteristic of that period, one of which is the wish to have a child.
