It has been emphasized that in certain episodes of masturbation, especially those without conscious fantasy or those in which the conscious fantasy does not prove illuminating, analysis of the specific masturbatory technique may lead to the uncovering of the unconscious fantasy. This is due to the fact that the unconscious fantasy may be acted out via the masturbating technique. In the analysis, such techniques are treated as symptoms or, more accurately, as though they were manifest dream contents. It has been stressed that, more often than not, the patient will omit such details in the service of resistance, and that the patient must be trained as to their importance by the analyst's questioning. Clinical examples have been presented in illustration of this premise. Finally, a question was raised as to the possibility that the assumed universality of beating fantasies may manifest itself through the physical act of masturbation itself.
