We see community psychiatry as a public health venture that demands affecting individual internal systems by external social
systems. We see the social reality as a force affecting the individual's internal equilibrium via a complex of channels regulating drive discharge by complementing ego structures. We see the reality operating as a series of signs (values, expectations) mediating change demands or maintenance demands of structures. We see the signs of social reality being responded to as if emanating from a love object replacing the parents and from that source gaining relevance. We see the sticking to the adaptational tasks imposed by the social reality as being a reality guidance process propelled from within, and the symptoms generated by the adaptational processes as being the noise, which, if we follow, will lead us to the internal processes involved in the phase adaptation. We see the adaptational noise level as being affected by the constellation of the immediate actual social reality; that is, the ratio of structure-changing to structure-maintaining forces. Finally, we see the concepts of structure-maintaining and structure-changing forces as equally useful in more fully understanding the individual as well as a society of individuals.
