Case material has been presented which illustrates that certain words and phrases may suddenly appear, interspersed with the patient's more typical language style, during phases of intense treatment. These communications are particularly susceptible to analysis because resistance is low at the moment they are spoken. The results of such focused analysis, if properly timed, lead directly to the deepest roots of the personality and provide an excellent opportunity for linking these roots to the transference, to the patient's personality, to his life experience, and to the working-through process.
