I have reviewed Freud's writings and subsequent literature regarding day residues and their relationship to the dream. The subject of recalling forgotten dreams was reviewed, and the concept of the "recall residue" was presented. Based on this review, a series of hypotheses was offered describing the relationship between day and recall residues and the dreams to which they are related. Clinical material was presented to illustrate and elaborate upon these hypotheses. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings were discussed briefly.
