In the panel report on Psychoanalytic Evaluation of Addiction and Habituation the following corrections should be noted. (1) The reference to Wieder and Kaplan on p. 214 is incomplete. The correct reference is Wieder, H. and Kaplan, E. H., Drug use in adolescents: psychodynamic meaning and pharmacogenic effect, Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, 24:399-431, 1969. (2) Pp. 213-215 incorrectly imply that Wieder and Kaplan discussed only the psychogenic effect of amphetamine and its derivatives in their study. In fact, they discussed hallucinogens and opiates as well, relating the psychological effects of the former to the psychic phenomena characteristic of the transition from the autistic to the symbiotic phase (Mahler), and of the latter to the narcissistic regressive phenomenon (Mahler). (3) In all of these respects W. Frosch found himself in agreement with Wieder and Kaplan. One point of difference should have been noted: Wieder and Kaplan (Mahler p. 429) suggested that in addicts the drug of choice is the "agent that chemically facilitates his pre-existing preferential mode of conflict solution" since it gratifies the addict's "unconscious wish to regress to a specific developmental level." Frosch (Mahler p. 215) preferred to limit this to certain cases, rather than to generalize from his experience as Wieder and Kaplan did from theirs.
