The use of insurance for payment of analytic fee, particularly when the entire fee is paid this way, serves as a source of resistance. The unconscious fantasy is that "I am protected against loss of my penis and my body contents. I am in control and need not fear the analyst." Analysands in whom isolation and intellectualization are already favored mechanisms of defense and in whom anal level conflicts and fixations predominate may well be rendered unanalyzable when the entire analytic fee is paid by insurance.
