Because it aims at correcting the effects of past experience, the most basic objective of the psychoanalytic procedure is to actualize the past. This is partly achieved by the manipulation of time experience, which in analysis is twofold: by promoting the denial of the idea of time in its own setting ("timelessness"), it brings forth the past, and by inducing time consciousness through a strict control of rigid time arrangements, it emphasizes current reality. Under these contrasting conditions, the experiencing of the interaction of the past and the present is facilitated. We have explored some implications of these observations for a psychology of time. We have also attempted to view the question of timing in analysis in relation to the genesis of the time experience.
