The case of a patient with a narcissistic personality structure is described, and the course of his four-and-a-half years of analysis given. The nature of the narcissistic transference that underlay the transference neurosis is set forth. Evidence is offered to support the thesis that the patient used specific fantasies as though they were intangible representations of transitional objects.
