Abortions, which have become a prominent issue for legal and ethical debate, are here examined in a psychoanalytic study. A case is presented of a young married woman who had five induced abortions. The patient's unconscious fantasies and conflicts have been described and clarified in an attempt to underscore the multifaceted and complex determinants of this ego-dystonic pattern of behavior. Such psychoanalytic investigation, it is hoped, will stimulate interest in and appreciation of the newly blossoming pattern of wholesale abortions.
