NATHANIEL ROSS WAS CONNECTED with the Journal from its inception, and appointed to the position of Associate Editor within a year. He had a natural bent for editing, and participated in formulating and carrying through editorial policies and procedures. What Dr. Ross brought to his task was a vigor, a sense of resolution, an optimism which served the Journal well—for he refused to be daunted by the difficulties bound to beset a new psychoanalytic publishing venture.
When the Book Section of the Journal was launched in 1954, Nat Ross assumed responsibility for it. He introduced the book essays, which, with their combination of criticism and originality, have become so integral a part of the Journal. To select provocative topics, to find the appropriate person to write the essays, demanded extraordinary erudition as well as familiarity with the interests and accomplishments not only of those in the analytic world, but of authorities in other disciplines. For these exacting tasks, Nat Ross was eminently qualified. The facility with which he expressed himself and his critical acumen equally qualified him to edit the descriptive book notices—and to write a great many of them. Exceptional scholarship and standards marked his many years of distinguished service and contributed to the growth and high caliber of the Journal.
