Our clinical material form the analyses of two patients confirms Abraham's hypothesis that the bifurcation of the road symbolizes the female genitals. This adds credence to his suggestion that the site at which Oedipus killed Laius, according to the Greek myth, represents the mother's genitals over which father and son do battle. In addition, we suggest that the junction of the torso and the lower extremities, the location of the genitals, is a sensory base not only for the symbol of the bifurcation of the road, but also for the symbol three. The fork in the road depicts uncertainty about arriving at a decision, ascertaining whether to select an incestuous or nonincestuous object, a heterosexual or homosexual object.
