We take the greatest pleasure and pride in announcing the receipt of two extraordinary gifts. Both of our benefactors have chosen to remain anonymous at this time. In expressing our deep gratitude, we note that these gifts were bestowed in honor of the Journal and psychoanalytic scholarship. It is a happy coincidence that they were bestowed during the Journal's 25th year and thus may, in a sense, also be regarded as an auspicious celebration of our anniversary.
One gift provides editorial funds that now make it possible to endow two annual Journal prizes for excellence. One prize will be awarded for the best clinical essay written by a candidate or psychoanalyst within two years of having graduated from an approved training institution. Another prize will be open to all and will be awarded for the best essay on any aspect of psychoanalysis.
The papers will be recommended by the Editorial Board for final decision by a special Editor's Prize Committee. The Prize papers will be published in the Journal, and the authors will be cited and awarded from $350 to $500. Regulations determining these awards will be announced later.
The other gift consists of first editions of virtually all of Freud's writings, as well as first editions of other early psychoanalytic classics. The Editor has been designated Curator of this wonderful collection, which has been assigned in perpetuity to the American Psychoanalytic Association. It will be on permanent display at the Central Office in New York City, where it will also be available for appropriate use.
It is anticipated that these generous gifts will inspire and promote our scientific and professional aspirations and attainments.
