ERNST TICHO, CHAIRMAN, SET THE STAGE for the panel by defining its focus—an ego psychology object relations theory, based primarily on the work of Jacobson, Mahler, and Kernberg and with some affinity for the works of Winnicott, Balint, and Fairbairn. He characterized this theory as a link between metapsychology and the clinical and experential aspects of psychoanalysis. The theory stresses the influences of early internal archaic fantasy on external object relations and their repersonification in the transference relationship, where they are available for scrutiny by the analyst and the analysand. Countertransference, empathy, and intuition are important tools for the analyst in this work. Ticho related that he has had particular experience with patients who come for second analyses stating that they can understand themselves but cannot apply this knowledge. Ticho believes that this state of affairs results when important early object relations are either not perceived by the analyst or not communicated to the patient.
