This volume maintains the format of its predecessors by division into sections. The first section is devoted to problems of development. E. James Anthony, in his usual lively style, discusses "The Family and the Psychoanalytic Process in Children." He demonstrates the impact of the family on the analytic process in the case of a nine-year-old girl suffering from fears of dying. The severe psychopathology of the parents influenced the child's construction of an internalized ideal family which was reflected in the transference.
The increased psychoanalytic interest in narcissism and the self is evidenced by the inclusion of three related articles. Beulah Kramer Amsterdam and Morton Levitt distinguish self-awareness from the sense of self. They credit several factors in the second year of life with aiding the development of self-other differentiation and self-awareness. Gerald Stechler and Samuel Kaplan report on developmental research regarding the self. It is based on longitudinal studies of well babies begun in 1949 at the James J. Putnam Children's Center. An example is given of a child studied from birth to one year of age. The third article is by Paul M. Brinich, who discusses the wide range of effects of adoption on the child's self- and object representations.
Also in this section is a brief historical survey of the use and disuse of reconstruction by Phyllis Greenacre, who is encouraged by the reawakened interest in it. Sebastiano Santostefano looks at cognition from the standpoint of an analyst. He sees the "new" look at cognition as a "viable alternative to Piaget's model" and proposes his own model. Beth A. Bernstein draws attention to the reactions of siblings of twins. Such siblings often feel closed out of the twin relation, an intensification of the feeling of exclusion from the parental dyad. The children she describes developed intense sibling rivalry and searched for twin surrogates for themselves. The closing article in this section is
