This excessively discursive volume presents the author's continuing efforts to convey his particular perspective of the intricacies of communication in the therapeutic dyad. Over two thirds consist of Langs's edited transcripts of his audio-taped teaching seminars in psychotherapy for residency-level trainees in an outpatient clinical setting. Each of the seminars is designated as a chapter and titled according to salient themes embedded in Langs's free-form commentary. To these are appended an excellent bibliography and three quite different addenda: the first a preprint of a concurrent article, "Some communicative properties of the bi-personal field"; the second a four-page outline of the components of the listening process; the last a glossary of special terms, coined or derived, that must be mastered in order to follow the author in his formulations.
