The borderline syndrome is comprised of different subsyndromes, subtypes, or subcategories. Thus, Otto Kernberg has described in detail a number of borderline disorders of varying degrees of character pathology (even though not in the chapter he contributes to this book, except tangentially), and Roy Grinker did subdivide his borderline syndrome into four types, extending from the psychotic to the neurotic border of functioning. In recognizing such subcategories, both authors conceived them as a continuum of pathology, emphasizing, all the same, the independence of the condition as such.
