By Samuel Weber. Minneapolis: Univ. Minnesota Press, 1982, 179 pp., $10.95.
This is a thoughtful book, although it will alienate many readers because of its arduous style and dense argumentation that cries for elaboration. The polyglot American author first wrote the book in German and then, with some modifications, translated it into an English that is at times strained and painfully complicated. I belabor this point at the ouset for this provocative work might well meet the fate of many other challenging yet ill-expressed writings in psychoanalytic circles. On the other hand, psychoanalysts, who are interested in a novel, bold interpretation of Freud and who are then motivated to read and reread many involuted passages will discover an author with a fine multidisciplinary awareness.
