Edited by The Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. New York: Int. Univ. Press, 1982, xii + 388 pp., $30.00.
This volume is a compendium of some very interesting and provocative papers. It was dedicated to the late Dr. Joan Fleming of the
Chicago Institute. Befitting the dedication, a significant portion of the contents of the volume is devoted to psychoanalytic education. There are four major groupings of contributions. The first section is on psychoanalytic education, followed by sections on theoretical studies, psychoanalytic history and applied psychoanalysis. There are 21 individual papers by 24 contributors contained within 388 pages. The volume contains a helpful index and the tables of contents of Volumes I-X of this valuable Annual. Among the papers on psychoanalytic education is one by Jacob Arlow on a psychoanalytic perspective of psychoanalytic education and another by Homer Curtis exploring the educational prerequisites for analytic training. Additional papers on psychoanalytic education are offered by Leo Rangell, Helen Beiser, Victor Calef and a paper on "The Problem of the Probem Candidate," by Stanley Weiss.
Theoretical studies include a paper by Harold Blum on the "Transference in Psychoanalysis and in Psychotherapy" and a "Revision of the Psychoanalytic Theory of Affect" by Pinchas Noy. There are additional theoretical contributions by Samir Stephanos, Robert Stolorow, George Atwood and Robert Holt, as well as a paper by Edwardo Val on "Self-Esteem Regulation and Narcissism."
The section on psychoanalytic history contains a compelling review by Anna Freud of "The Past Revisited" and an interesting perspective by George H. Pollock on "Psychoanalysis in Russia and U.S.S.R., 1908-1979."
