Diversity in psychoanalytic approaches to psychic structure leads to argument over the relative status of self and ego. This paper takes the position that a sense of self emerges and endures because of the synergistic functioning of the ego. Therefore, the structures under consideration are those of the structural model. A complete view of psychic structure formation must consider not only the origin and development of each of the psychic systems, but also their integration within the overall personality. Affect, conflict, libidinal object constancy, and the infantile neurosis are scrutinized as to their roles in the formation and integration of the id, ego, and superego.
