The central thesis of this paper is that psychic structure may be considered as a complex system of varying configuration. This configuration can be a microstructure or a macrostructure such as the ego or the self. The issue of changing structure through treatment involves the patient's expanded understanding. The steps involved in this process are sequentially delineated and illustrated with a clinical example. The crucial step of self-reflection is utilized as a sine qua non of such change.
