On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the Program Committee felt that it was appropriate to try the impossible. They asked Dr. Schafer and me to integrate and to synthesize a comprehensive conceptualization of some 21 papers, to say nothing about introductions and comments, presented at three different half-day panels at the Annual Meeting. While such a request may be taken as a compliment, I have to express certain misgivings, primarily because I fear that I may slight certain issues and important presentations made by members of the various panels. I can only assure them that any such oversight is unintentional. I shall try to highlight some of the broader issues and to emphasize a few topics of special interest.
