Matters of psychoanalysis as science and what status clinical work merits within its empirical enterprise are considered here, in the light of several research studies. Summarized, these include empirical investigations of the problems of agreement and stereotypy in psychoanalytic formulation, and a briefly sketched investigation of the effects of psychoanalytic interventions from the viewpoints of two psychoanalytic paradigms.
