The Columbia Records Project is one of the largest data base studies of psychoanalytic outcomes (and factors associated with outcomes) undertaken in modern times. Data were collected on hundreds of variables for 1,575 adult patients treated at the Psychoanalytic Clinic between 1945 and 1971. This paper presents a historical and critical overview of the methodology and findings of the project, and points toward promising directions for future research on psychoanalytic outcomes.
