Since 1976 a new genre of transference formulations has been developed with the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme (CCRT and then with other methods. This genre represents a formalization of clinical systems for transference formulation. For example, each CCRT formulation includes the wishes toward other people, expected responses of other people, and responses of the self. The use of these guided systems for transference formulation permits greater agreement among clinicians and more rapid formulation of transference. The discussion answers three key questions about the use of guided measures of transference: 1. Do they include unconscious aspects? 2. Do they include the context for the patient's major symptoms? 3. Do they inhibit or distort the natural sensitivity of clinicians in making transference formulations?
