THIS ISSUE OPENS WITH an appreciation by Arnold M. Cooper of outgoing Editor Theodore Shapiro, who has so ably directed the Journal through its fourth decade. Also deserving of recognition are the two outgoing Associate Editors, Robert N. Emde, who has served since 1987, and Otto F. Kernberg, Book Review Editor for the past 20 years. Dr. Shapiro, in his valedictory as editor, "View from the Bridge," (41/4) made special note of Dr. Emde's contribution to the recent Supplement on Affect, and to his co-editorship of the forthcoming Supplement on empirical research. Dr. Kernberg, during his extensive tenure, has extended the linguistic and geographic reach of the book reviews while maintaining their exceptionally high quality. The Journal is fortunate that he has agreed to continue as assistant to his successor, Glen Gabbard, and to screen French and German books for review. Dr. Gabbard has also enlisted Esther Burstein, Gunther Perdigao, and Jacqueline Amati-Mehler to screen books written in Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian, respectively.
Dr. Gabbard, as new Book Review Editor, joins Lawrence Friedman, Phyllis Tyson, and Henry F. Smith as Associate Editors. Dr. Gabbard, Training and Supervising Analyst at the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and holds an endowed chair at the Menninger School of Psychiatry. The author or editor of eight books, including Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Clinical Practice, and over 100 scientific papers, he has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal since 1991. In 1992 he was recipient of the Sigmund Freud Award of the American Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians.
Dr. Phyllis Tyson is Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, at the University of California San Diego;
