MARK KANZER HAS BEEN identified with psychoanalysis since he completed military service at the end of World War II. A student of analysis, he became immersed in its theory and practice, and in psychoanalytic education and research. His scholarship was awesome, and his prolific contributions enriched the psychoanalytic literature. In addition to his own papers, his book essays and book reviews graced the pages of this and other journals. A most respected psychoanalytic teacher and supervisor, Dr. Kanzer is a pillar of psychoanalytic education. He was a founder of the Division of Psychoanalytic Education at Downstate Medical Center, now The Psychoanalytic Institute at New York University, served as Director of the Institute, and actively participated in its growth and development. He actively recruited recent graduates of the Institute as junior members of the faculty. The new members of the faculty were encouraged to critically evaluate and reorganize the courses, and to contribute to an ongoing modification and modernization of the curriculum. His own interests were wide-ranging, but he retained a particular and inspired interest in Freud and innovative, contemporary studies of Freud's case histories.
Dr. Kanzer not only contributed to scholarship through his own creativity, but through his financial support. He has endowed programs at Yale and Hebrew Universities, including the Freud Chair at the Hebrew University. He has had a deep and abiding interest in this Journal, served on its Editorial Board and advised the Editor, and provided an initially anonymous endowment for the Journal through the Mark and Viva Kanzer Fund, made known in 1978. The Kanzer Fund permitted the establishment of the Joural prizes, and facilitated publication of the Journal Supplements.
We salute our distinguished author, educator, and benefactor, and convey to him our great esteem and appreciation.
