The central argument of this intriguing and challenging book is that a revolution has occurred in psychoanalysis, a revolution that has changed its theory and practice in profound ways. The extent of this revolution and its momentous consequences, Stephen Mitchell argues, has not been fully recognized either within the profession or outside of it because of our need as analysts to hold onto our traditions. Our loyalty to Freud and to the theory and practice of analysis that has evolved from his discoveries, Mitchell believes, has limited our view and has made it difficult for us to appreciate the discontinuities, the radical shifts that have taken place in our ways of thinking and working.
