The Italian Psychoanalytic Society and its journal, Rivista di Psicoanalisi, have undertaken the ambitious project of breaking down barriers between their group and non-Italophone colleagues, by considering, in this inaugural publication of the monograph series Psychoanalytic Issues, problems in writing about psychoanalysis. They are to be congratulated for attempting a thoughtful psychoanalytic
investigation of a topic that has barely been touched. Some authors in this collection speak of feeling daunted by the task of writing, a difficulty, unfortunately, that seems to be inscribed in their writing here by its abstractness, relative lack of focus, and hesitation to pursue specific problems in detail. I would encourage Rivista di Psicoanalisi, now that the project is under way, to return with a sharper focus to problems of writing in psychoanalysis, perhaps devoting another volume of this series to the topic or, better yet, devoting the entire project to it. Our Italian colleagues could make a major contribution to the field by further exploring these problems, a topic no other group has chosen to address.
