It is felicitous and timely that the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association has built an issue around the contentious questions underlying the subtitle of Arnold Richards's target paper, “A Plea for a Measure of Humility.” Six commentaries and two articles in response to his paper have been contributed by the editors or past editors of other major psychoanalytic journals, and this section is preceded by three plenary presentations to APsaA's national meetings, each dealing with a topic closely related to Richards's central theme. Also included are two articles that fortuitously came over the transom, so to speak, each again dealing with an aspect of this supplement's central issue.
