June 8, 2003. I am delighted that my psychoanalytic hypothesis regarding the therapeutic action of SSRI medications, published in JAPA 50/3, has stimulated further scholarly and clinical dialogue. To me, of the five responses printed here, the most intriguing and important is Levinson's. Since I view his comments as fundamentally misguided, I will devote more space to their discussion than to the more carefully reasoned, well-informed contributions of Ostow, Wolpert, Sandberg, and Levine. Ostow, Wolpert, and Levine are basically in agreement with me and bring their wealth of accumulated knowledge and experience to bear on my aggression hypothesis. Sandberg offers an intelligent, scientifically respectable alternative to my hypothesis, one which, in my opinion, merits further careful investigation. I will discuss these contributors shortly, but I feel I need most urgently to speak to Levinson's contentions.
