This study attempted to look beneath the self-report measure of depression (BDI) using clinical/projective data and language style data in a nonclinical sample of university students by addressing three research questions. The first question focused on the relationship between self reported depression using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Referential Activity (RA;see Bucci and Mergenthaler 1999) measures ap plied to early memories. Contrary to previous work with clinically de pressed subjects, the expected relationship of low RA to depression was not found.
Luborsky's Core Conflictual Relationship Theme, or CCRT (Luborsky and Crits-Christoph 1990), was applied to the early memories for a subset of participants to examine possible underlying dynamics that can not be seen through a self-report. Based on this method, the second research question, concerning differences between participants' CCRT responses of Self (RS) and Other (RO) focusing on the quality of the responses, positive vs. negative, was addressed. No significant differ ences were found; for both groups negative responses of Self were
