In this research section we present summaries of the final fifteen posters from the large and successful Fifth Annual Poster session. Readers will find two groups of summaries—II. Human Development: Intersections with Psychoanalytic Perspectives; and III. Dimensions and New Measures Relevant to Psychoanalysis. These summaries represent the rich array of posters presented in January 2006. The first group of presentations—I. New Studies of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: Conceptual, Process, and Outcome Studies—was published in JAPA 54/4.
As word of our openness to psychoanalytically relevant theoretical and empirical contributions has spread to colleagues in other fields, they have become increasingly aware of this new opportunity for working with psychoanalytic ideas and disseminating their work. The Poster Session has greatly benefited from this networking, having received a record number of rigorous, thoughtful, and original presentations in 2006. This welcome trend continues, with submissions to the 2007 Poster Session exceeding by a third those of the previous year.
I expect readers will be delighted, and intellectually stimulated, by the new ideas, directions, interpretations, and research methods they will find here. Deliberately, the summaries present works in progress—the beginnings of longer papers, and of new programs of research. To allow authors to more clearly communicate the conceptual and empirical complexity of their work and to argue for its wider implications, we encouraged all to go beyond the more usual (and telegraphic) single-page abstract.
