The International Psychoanalysis Library, under the auspices of the International Psychoanalytical Association, offers in this volume the history of psychoanalysis in Latin America and the outstanding conceptual and technical contributions of the region to psychoanalytic ideas and practice. The IPA Publication Committee recognized that the important contributions of Latin America to psychoanalysis remain little known in other regions of the world. The committee selected Sergio Lewkowicz of Porto Alegre, Brazil, and Silvia Flechner of Montevideo, Uruguay, to approach the Board of Directors of FEPAL (Federación Psicoanalítica de América Latina) to propose a joint production of the book to be published simultaneously in English and in Spanish. They received an enthusiastic response due to the fact that FEPAL's members are well aware that analytic papers published by their component societies in local journals and books rarely reach analysts on other continents, because few analysts in other IPA regions read Spanish and in any case have limited access to the Latin American journals. Latin American economic restrictions make it practically impossible for local analysts to have their works translated into English, the prevalent language of the IPA, or into other European languages.
The editors discussed with the Publication Committee the psychoanalytic concepts that would represent original contributions by Latin American authors and after careful evaluation chose eight subjects and an historical introduction to be developed as chapters of the book. Finally, they selected prominent representatives of each conceptual approach to write the chapters. In an effort to widen the international dialogue, the editors invited a distinguished analyst from another part of the world to comment on each chapter.
