It is with great sadness that I and everyone at JAPA mourn the loss of Stuart Hauser, our long-serving Associate Editor for Research, who died unexpectedly on August 5, 2008, of complications related to his treatmnt for esophageal cancer. JAPA, the psychoanalytic community, his beloved Harvard, the many other institutions and organizations to which he belonged, and of course his family and friends share in our collective grief. It is fitting that this issue contains one of his many contributions to our literature, part of a legacy of research and scholarship that characterized his illustrious professional career. At JAPA, Stuart catalyzed an ongoing commitment to bringing the best empirical research relative to psychoanalysis to our readers, always demanding clear, concise, and accessible expression in order to present research to a primarily clinical readership. The many authors who worked with Stuart can attest to his insistent demand for excellence and his tireless availability for help in improving manuscripts. Stuart was deeply committed to enhancing the status of psychoanalysis in the empirical science community, a commitment shared by all of us at JAPA. His own research over a long and productive career, the interest and generosity he showed to younger colleagues, his courtly grace, and his good humor endeared Stuart to his many collaborators and students worldwide. We at JAPA will try to do justice to his scholarly legacy. He will be missed.
