Sadomasochism is to psychoanalysts what superconductivity was to physicists. It is a phenomenon that goes against reason, intuition, and common sense. The greatest minds in physics, Einstein, Heisenberg, Bohr, Pauli, and many others, tried and failed to explain how electricity, at seven degrees above absolute zero, could flow without resistance. Superconductivity was discovered by a Dutch physicist in 1911. Two years earlier, in 1909, Freud wrote to Jung, “In my practice, I am chiefly concerned with repressed sadism in my patients; I regard it as the most frequent cause of failure of therapy…. In general, sadism is becoming more and more important to me” (cited in Novick and Novick 1996, p. 42).
