This is a book that deals with perversions—a subject on which everyone has an opinion and every opinion raises more questions that it answers. Consider the word, perversion. The term has fallen out of professional fashion, and a succession of alternatives have been proposed. What do we call “them”—the practices? Paraphilias, neosexualities? De gustibus or dis-gustibus? What's in a name? What do we call “them,” the people who perform these practices? What do we feel about them? And are “they” all alike? Is a young man arousing himself by putting on Victoria's Secret bra and panties in any way psychodynamically related to a priest molesting young boys or girls, let alone a rapist or sadistic torturer? And if the answer is yes, then what about the massive differences in behavior and kinds of harm to others? If no, then how can the same word be used to describe both?
