This beautiful and memorable work on the transmission of trauma across generations bears witness to the unfolding effects of trauma, at once devastating and often pervasively subtle and difficult to recognize. Its value lies in its many illustrations of the ways in which recognition of multigenerational trauma is directly helpful in liberating our patients from their suffering. Originating in two conferences held at the Erikson Institute at the Austen Riggs Center, its contributions are unusually coherent for an edited work, as well as consistent in their high quality. M. Gerard Fromm's editorship and introduction to the book, and his two integrative essays, deserve much of the credit for this.
