In my commentary on Otto Kernberg and Robert Michels in JAPA 64/3, I unwittingly misrepresented the educational policies of the William Alanson White Institute.
Ruth Imber, chair of the Appointments and Promotions Committee at William Alanson White, has clarified that the institute does in fact have a long-standing internal training analyst (TA) system, comparable to that of other institutes within the American Psychoanalytic Association. The sole exception involves the rule requiring external certification for APsaA institute graduates seeking TA status. When White joined APsaA in January 2015, all current TAs were grandfathered in, bypassing the APsA certification requirement. This arrangement will be in force for all White graduates who go through the internal screening TA process for the ten years following that date.
