This small but wide-ranging volume by the Argentinian psychoanalyst Julio Moreno deserves careful attention from anyone interested in the human condition, theory of mind, or contemporary culture. The author has an unusual background, having begun in medicine, then moving to research in biophysics and neurophysiology, and finally returning to his early interest in psychology to train in psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and child analysis. This book, which draws on sociology, anthropology, computer science, genetics, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, reflects these diverse interests. Moreno's unique synthesis testifies to his highly original mind. Because his earlier works have appeared almost entirely in Spanish, English-speaking readers have until now had limited access to his ideas and their evolution.
