The $1000 JAPA Prize is awarded to the author of the best paper published in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association during the previous year. All publications, including review articles, research articles, essays and book essays, may be considered for the award. Candidates for the award are nominated by the members of the JAPA Editorial Board, with the final decision being made by the Editor-in-Chief.
JAPA's $500 New Author Prize recognizes significant contributions to the journal by new authors. It is awarded for the best published manuscript by a new author, and is presented at the Winter Meetings of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
A new author is considered to be someone who has not previously published in JAPA or any other major psychoanalytic journal and whose psychoanalytic career is in its early stages. A mentoring/editorial group has been established to review submissions by new authors and assist in developing manuscripts for publication in JAPA.
Manuscripts must be submitted via the JAPA submission process, using the online system at . At the time of submission, authors should indicate in the cover letter that the paper is to be considered for the New Author Prize, and may ask that it be directed to the mentoring/editorial group for assistance in manuscript development. Final decision about publication remains with the Editorial Board and the Editor-in-Chief, as does selection of the annual prize-winning paper.
